Die Entstehung der Zünfte fällt ins Hochmittelalter und ist eng verbunden mit den Stadtgründungen.
Die zunehmende Spezialisierung des Handwerks ließ den Bedarf nach Organisation wachsen und so bildeten sich die ersten Zünfte heraus, die für ihre Mitglieder eine wichtige soziale Absicherungsfunktion hatten. Durch die Herausbildung und Durchsetzung einheitlicher Qualitätsstandards leisteten die Zünfte einen wichtigen Beitrag für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung.
