Jährlich wird in Aachen der Karlspreis an Politikerinnen und Politiker verliehen, die sich um die europäische Einigung verdient gemacht haben. Und in der Tat, das riesige Reich, das er regierte, umfasst die europäischen Kernstaaten und Deutsche wie Franzosen reklamieren ihn gleichermaßen als den Stammvater ihrer Nation. Der Film nähert sich dieser legendenumwobenen Person an und macht ihn für Schülerinnen und Schüler fassbar. Er geht der Frage nach ob Karl ein Heiliger oder doch eher ein grausamer Kriegsherr war.
